Living with thousands of houseplants

Meet Jonny AKA @thebeardedplantaholic a houseplant lover who lives the biophilic lifestyle to the max.

Jonny surrounded by houseplants

@thebeardedplantaholic

Jonny lives in Castlemorton, Gloucestershire with his family and thousands of plants. The majority of his plants are in the main living space, as well as an outdoor greenhouse. He has a ‘jungle canopy’ which trails tantalisingly over the top of a staircase and also a propagation space with a greenhouse and propagation terrarium.

Since a child Jonny has always loved plants. It started outdoors for him, being a country boy he grew up watching and helping his parents in the garden. His love then turned from garden plants to tropical plants.

The positive impact of living with many plants

Jonny is a great advocate for the positive impact that living with plants can bring to your life. There is no doubt for Jonny that his plant-loving lifestyle brings him sensations of peace and tranquility. Furthermore, he wholeheartedly believes that living a biophilic lifestyle spurs on creativity. Jonny talks passionately about the wonderment of plants, how they grow, evolve, adapt and recreate themselves. Surrounding himself with plants, Jonny feels this creative energy rubs off on him, enabling him to be more creative.

When asked how his family feel about living within a plant abundant home, Jonny says,

“They are better with it now! It’s been a bumpy ride! I think when I closed off the main entrance to the house a few years ago was a big one, but thankfully calm has been restored!”

A favourite plant care activity

Jonny acknowledges that misting plants is a contentious subject (is it even beneficial for the plants), but it is a task that he finds therapeutic and relaxing.

Conversely, there is something about Jonny’s plant-care life that gets him down, and thats mealybugs. He has learnt to accept and live with them in controlled numbers, treating immediately and continually with rubbing alcohol and provanto, to ensure an outbreak does not escalate.

You can follow Jonny and his incredible plant journey on Instagram @thebeardedplantaholic he is also a co-host on Bearded Growers Radio, where you can listen live on Monday evenings from 8-10pm here.

Hear us chatting to Jonny when we were guests on the radio show here.

Jonny also has a web shop where he sells some of his plants. So if you’re after something a bit different its worth keeping an eye on that!
